• Each cyanotype print is original and unique due to variations associated with the hand-made process. My subjects have been carefully selected and preserved through a pressing process.
• The cyanotype process, invented in 1842 by scientist and astronomer Sir John Herschel, is a historic chemical printing technique, originally used as a way of producing documents known as blueprints. The word cyan originates from the Greek language, meaning ‘dark blue substance’. It was Anna Atkins who famously used the cyanotype process to create photograms of botanical specimens and seaweed, going on to produce the first photographically illustrated book in 1843.
• My process involves laying a physical object(s) or a negative onto paper hand-coated with a light-sensitive solution (in very dim lighting). The paper is then exposed to a UV light source, either natural sunlight or artificial UV lighting. After exposure, the paper goes through a wash process, developing its rich and characteristic ‘Prussian blue’ tones, and revealing the final image.
• Your cyanotype print comes with a signed, embossed, individually numbered, and dated, Certificate of Authenticity that verifies its origin and me as the artist
• Hand-made in New Zealand
